How on Earth are we already at the end of 2017? I remember my last days in Ljubljana so vividly, it’s hard to believe I was heavily pregnant and rushing to finish my thesis while still planning a monumental move to Belgium. This year was crazy, unpredictable but so amazing.
Let’s dive right into what went on in 2017!
One great thing about living in a new country as a blogger is getting the chance to write about different places, so I was happy to see you’ve liked my stories and tips from our new adopted home. I’m looking forward sharing more gems with you!

Becoming a mom, obviously <3
We are now a family of three and it feels so surreal and wonderful. And we get to do it while living in a foreign country. I won’t pretend it hasn’t been stressful or easy, but it’s been endlessly regarding. I feel truly blessed to be where we are right now. I may be more tired, but also a bit more wise. Or at least I want to think so. I’ll probably write more about my journey through motherhood soon. I wish I could now but I still can’t put into words how so life changing this all has been.
We had the chance to welcome family and friends over and they showered us with so much love! One of the things that worried me was not being able to see my them more, but I’m so happy that was not the case. We may have not seen each other as often as we would’ve liked sometimes, but we definitely had quality time together!
I know what you’re thinking, Isabel you are so cheesy! But it’s true. It was so hard for me to keep up with the new posts or even being able to write my own Wanderful Wednesday stories, but I’m so glad I persisted as much as I could. I’m so thankful for all your support and understanding. Keeping up with the blog has been a bit tricky since becoming a mom, but all the extra effort I need to put into it now doesn’t feel like a sacrifice. I honestly don’t know what I would do without this community. Thank you all!
Exploring the Brussels & neighboring cities
Besides our trips to Mexico and Slovenia, we mostly traveled to cities near by. Starting with a trip to Amsterdam with my mom, followed by local city breaks to Oostend, Breda, Ghent, Antwerp, Leuven, Hasselt and Lille. We also embraced our new Sunday tradition that involved visiting almost every Food and Cultural Festival in Brussels, some of our favorites were the Medieval and Portuguese festivals.
MY INSTAGRAM FAVORITES
I’ve learned that it wouldn’t hurt if I was to be more patient with myself, starting by taking one thing at a time. I know that when I was younger I thrived on being able to juggle a lot of things at the same time, but I’ve come to realize that I can’t sustain that anymore and I don’t feel an ounce of guilt about it. I’m getting more comfortable with not being able to “keep up” with trends, expectations and illusions.
On the other hand, I need to be more consistent with the things that I really want to do, whether is trying to lose weight, studying for my Belgian driver’s test, setting a routine for Max, blogging & Instagrammin’ and specially with starting new projects. In the end, life is about planting the seed and patiently waiting for it to blossom when and if it needs to. I also need to learn how to let things go in order to make space for other things to grow, like new ways of doing things, adopting new perspectives, and let’s face it: embracing new mistakes.
A lot of things didn’t happen the way I wanted them to, but that doesn’t mean that things didn’t turn out to be okay. It’s crazy for me to think that I felt awful about getting a c-section or about not ‘succeeding’ with breastfeeding. I’ve come to realize that a lot of information about the ‘right’ ways to do pregnancy, birth, and feeding your baby is doing more harm than good in some cases. It’s like a new way of policing women’s bodies, and it is so frustrating and sad. But anyway, I might elaborate on that some other time. For now, I’ve learned that the most important thing is to do what makes your family happy.
Travel: Our travel plans for 2018 are not completely set but we have already booked our first trip of the year and it’s to Dublin! I am super excited, so please do send me your recommendations for the city. Other than that I think we will either try to take advantage of Charleroi’s cheap fairs or stick with traveling near by. Either way, I’m not complaining. We’re more ‘last minute let’s just go’ kind of travelers. Plus, an update on our Belgian Bucket list is due!
Blog: I have to be realistic, and that means that as long as Max is not on daycare, I will only be able to write a couple of posts per month. Which is what I was able to get done on average this year. I think it will work better for me to stick to that schedule, and try to stay consistent, rather than disappearing for more than a month and panic. Plus, if all goes well, I might be able to finally start some projects that I’ve been wanting to do for a long time! Cross your fingers that I might finally get my life together, lol.
And to answer the most frequently asked question: I think I’ll start working some time around summer next year. We are on the waiting lists for several nurseries, but if we don’t hear back by the end of the first trimester of the year, we will look into private childcare or babysitting. This is one of the things that I need to be more patient with next year.
